UNC falls to No. 1 South Carolina in Sweet 16

The UNC women’s basketball program bows out of the 2022 NCAA Tournament with a loss to South Carolina in the Sweet 16.

The UNC women’s basketball season came to an end on Friday night in the Sweet 16 at the hands of arguably the best team in the country.

No. 1 South Carolina held off No. 5 North Carolina 69-61 in Greensboro Friday backed by a 28-point, 22-rebound performance by junior forward Aliyah Boston.

After UNC held a slim lead after one quarter, the Gamecocks outscored the Tar Heels 17-8 in the second quarter to grab a 39-31 lead at halftime. The Gamecocks would continue to build on that lead and hold off a Tar Heels team that made it interesting down the stretch.

But in the end, Boston and the Gamecocks were too much.

Deja Kelly led North Carolina with 23 points on 9 of 18 shooting while Alexandra Zelaya added 10 points. The Gamecocks outrebounded the Tar Heels 48-33 which was the difference-maker in this one.

For UNC, the season is over. but the team reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 2015 season. What head coach Courtney Banghart has done with this team is remarkable. She has them on the right track and they should be even better next season.
