Nick Wright thinks Baker Mayfield would be upgrade for Patriots at QB

Nick Wright believes the Patriots would be upgraded with Baker Mayfield.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has many fans around the New England region and across the country. Nick Wright is not one of them.

Appearing on “First Things First” Monday, Wright suggested that Baker Mayfield would be an upgrade over Jones. Mayfield passed for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions last season. Injured for a portion of last season, Mayfield saw action against the Patriots in November. He went 11-of-21 on the afternoon throwing for 73 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Jones threw for 3,801 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions last season. He went 19-of-23 against Cleveland, throwing for 198 yards, and three touchdowns.

Wright expanded on his case for Mayfield the Patriots, as transcribed by Ricky Doyle of NESN.com.

“Once upon a time there were rumors the Patriots wanted to draft Baker in the first round,” Wright said. “The Patriots are looking around the AFC, and you know what they know? They know that their best-case scenario with Mac Jones is that one day he’s the ninth-best quarterback in this loaded quarterback conference. They should be looking for an upgrade. They won’t be.”

In what has been a quarterback carousel so far this season, Mayfield is still available. The Cleveland Browns traded for Deshaun Watson on Friday, signaling the official end of Mayfield’s tenure in Cleveland. With the Patriots envisioning Jones as a quarterback for the future, it would be hard to believe they would trade for Mayfield.
