At the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier told the media that they were looking for a veteran backup during free agency.
They found one on the first day of the legal tampering period, as the Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal with former Denver Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater that would pay him $6.5 million. The deal was officially announced after the start of the new league year.
Bridgewater’s contract includes $4.5 million in salary that is all fully guaranteed as well as $2 million in a signing bonus that is also fully guaranteed. The 30-year-old has a chance to earn $3.5 million in incentives. While it’s not known what the incentives are, one could assume they would be linked to playtime and opportunities, whether they are actual snaps or stats.
At this point, Bridgewater has the third-highest cap hit of any backup quarterback in the league for 2022 with only Case Keenum and Nick Foles ahead of him.
With Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history, it was smart to go after an experienced quarterback to back him up, and Bridgewater being a starter for most of his career, is probably the best backup they could’ve found.
