Panthers’ 2022 draft picks officially set

With yesterday’s compensation picks announced, here’s what the Panthers officially have to work with (for now) in the 2022 NFL draft.

Yesterday, the NFL announced the allocation of 39 compensation picks for the upcoming 2022 NFL draft. And the Carolina Panthers, as expected, did not receive any of them.

What they did receive, however, was the exact parameters—at least for the time being—of what they’ll have to work in about six weeks’ time. Here’s how it’ll look:

  • No. 6 (first round)
  • No. 137 (fourth round) *from Los Angeles Rams via Houston
  • No. 144 (fifth round) *via Jacksonville
  • No. 149 (fifth round)
  • No. 199 (sixth round) *via Las Vegas
  • No. 242 (seventh round) *from New England via Miami

Consider that a first draft of sorts, as this surely won’t be what the capital will look like when the draft is all said and done. Between general manager Scott Fitterer’s penchant to move around on the board and the organization’s ongoing pursuit of Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, these numbers can come and go—even well before April 28.

And just in case you forgot why there’s such a large hole between the first and fourth rounds, you can thank the trades of quarterback Sam Darnold and cornerback CJ Henderson for that.
