2022 NFL compensatory picks: Lions get 3 selections in draft including the top comp pick

The Detroit Lions earned 3 compensatory picks in the 2022 NFL draft for net losses in free agency, including the top comp pick at No. 97 overall

Lions GM Brad Holmes and his front office staff will have some extra selections in the 2022 NFL draft to help rebuild the team. The NFL revealed the compensatory draft picks for this year, and the Lions picked up three bonus selections in April’s draft.

The extra picks have been widely anticipated. While the exact formula for awarding compensatory picks is not publicly available, it’s become pretty easy to forecast the teams and slots for the extra picks based on net free agency gains and losses in the prior offseason. And no team lost more in net dollar value free agency than the Lions did in 2021.

Detroit earned the No. 97 overall pick, the top compensatory selection that comes at the end of the third round. The Lions also picked up an extra comp pick in the fifth and seventh rounds. Those picks are No. 177 and 217 overall, respectively.

The No. 97 pick comes courtesy of the mammoth contract wide receiver Kenny Golladay signed with the New York Giants.
