Auburn gymnasts earn three weekly awards

Three Auburn gymnasts won weekly SEC awards after strong performances in two meets last weekend.

Three Auburn gymnasts netted SEC weekly awards on Tuesday after the team competed in two meets over the weekend.

Auburn competed against the Florida Gators on March 4, where they tied, and then competed in the Elevate the Stage meet on March 6 where the Tigers competed against Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas. Auburn defeated Georgia and Arkansas, but dropped its first head-to-head contest of the season when it lost to Alabama.

Freshman Sunisa Lee won her fifth SEC Gymnast of the Week award after winning the all-around in both events over the weekend, scoring a 39.800 in Auburn’s tie with Florida and a 38.700 in the Elevate the Stage meet, where the Tigers competed against Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas. Lee also scored a perfect 10 on the beam against Florida.

Senior Darrian Gobourne won SEC Specialist of the week after she scored the first 10 of her career with her floor routine against UF. Gobourne followed it up at the Elevate the Stage meet with a 9.975 on the bars, a career-best, to earn the first Specialist of the Week award of her collegiate career.

Finally, Sophia Groth won her third Freshman of the Week award after a strong performance through both meets. Against the Gators, Groth set a career-best on the floor and the bars and tied her career-best score on the beam. At the Elevate the Stage meet, Groth scored a 9.925 on the beam that was good enough for the second-best of the meet.

The Tigers will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan on Saturday to compete in the Michigan Tri-Meet against Michigan and West Virginia.ย  The Michigan Tri-Meet will be the last meet before the SEC Championship meet on March 19.
