Seahawks to see more of 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

All this suggests Jimmy Garoppolo could be staying at least one more year in San Francisco.

The Seahawks and their loyal fans received unfortunate news when they learned Rams head coach Sean McVay was not retiring. However, they may be getting a semblance of a consolation prize from their rivals by the bay.

Last year the 49ers boldly traded up to the No. 3 spot in the draft to select North Dakota State’s quarterback Trey Lance. Gifted with raw potential but limited experience, it was widely expected Lance would sit behind the much-maligned Jimmy Garoppolo for a year, then become the starter in 2022 after San Francisco traded Garoppolo. The Kansas City Chiefs famously did this with Patrick Mahomes and his predecessor Alex Smith. This might not be the case, though.

Recent reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggest Lance is further behind in his development than many realize and Garoppolo – a quarterback who has helped guide the Niners to two NFC Championship appearances – apparently isn’t generating the trade interest the 49ers had hoped.

All this suggests Garoppolo could be staying at least one more year in San Francisco, which Seahawks fans everywhere would rejoice at.

By the numbers, Garoppolo isn’t necessarily a bad quarterback… San Francisco certainly wins far more with him at the helm than any of the backups who have played in his stead. Yet he is undeniably the Achilles Heel for a team with a championship-caliber roster.

Garoppolo is 1-4 against Seattle in his career.
