“I’ll tell you this, this is coming from my mouth, Bill is still as sharp as ever.”

Jerod Mayo is set on becoming an NFL head coach.

At the young age of 35, he interviewed for three head-coaching positions this offseason. Mayo spent eight seasons playing for the New England Patriots and has been an assistant coach in the organization for three years. He started as the inside linebackers coach, where he remains, but his responsibilities have grown into a de facto defensive coordinator.

Mayo discussed the opportunities he’s been offered to interview for defensive coordinator positions this year, but he’s turned them down to stay in New England. He said he’d only want to leave the organization if it were for a head-coaching gig.

He reiterated that point Wednesday on WEEI’s Merloni & Fauria, and said his most-desired job would be as head coach for the Patriots. But, he was quick to admit the 69-year-old Bill Belichick isn’t slowing down soon.

“There’s no secret I want to be a head coach in this league. And there’s no secret I love New England,” Mayo said. “I love the New England states. I love this area. My family loves this area and they have welcomed us with open arms since 2008 when I first got here. That would be the best-case scenario.

“With that being said, I want to be a head coach in this league and I’ll tell you this, this is coming from my mouth, Bill is still as sharp as ever. This guy is still going. You can say he’s getting older or whatever, this guy, he’s still there. He still works harder than a lot of other people. We’ll see what happens. That would be the best-case scenario that I could stay around here, but I am just not sure.”

Belichick already confirmed he’s coaching next season and from what it seems like, he could continue on past 2022.
