Former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was hired to be the new head coach of the Chicago Bears, leaving the Colts to find someone to fill the void on the staff.
As the Colts have gone through the process, they came to the conclusion that it would benefit both themselves and Eberflus if the latter essentially wiped the slate clean on the defensive side of the coaching staff,
The Colts have ultimately decided to bring in a new defensive coordinator from the outside, giving that new coach the chance to assemble his own staff.
“Once we decided we weren’t going to promote internally, we wanted to give the new defensive coordinator a chance to hire his own staff and give Flus a chance to bring people that were familiar with him,’’ said general manager Chris Ballard said Monday with 670 The Score.
While current safeties coach Alan Williams was thought to be in the mix as an internal hire, it appears he’s one of the finalists to be the defensive coordinator under Eberflus. It’s likely that roughly four assistant coaches will be following Eberflus to Chicago.
This has given the chance for the Colts to see what else is out there. They’ve already had six interviews either conducted or lined up so the decision should be coming soon.
But Ballard felt it was a win-win situation to let Eberflus build his staff while the Colts seek a new defensive coordinator to come in from the outside.
“We think it’s win-win,’’ Ballard said. “(The Bears are) getting some really good, only people, but also some really good football coaches coming into your organization as we will going forward here.’’
The Colts are going to have to replace just about every position on the defensive coaching staff. With Eberflus gone, he is likely taking with him linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi, cornerbacks coach James Rowe and assistant defensive backs coach David Overstreet II.
The Colts also will not be retaining defensive line coach Brian Baker, whose contract had run its course in 2021.
It will be interesting to see what kind of coordinator the Colts bring in but now we know that the candidates will come from the outside.
