After a disastrous performance in the Tennessee Titans’ season-ending loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round, quarterback Ryan Tannehill now finds himself on the hot seat going into 2022.
But while many fans are ready to move on from Tannehill, Titans great Eddie George believes Tennessee should stay the course with their quarterback, according to TMZ.
“He can be the guy,” George said of Tannehill. “It’s just one of those days for Tannehill, and it’s unfortunate. The turnovers certainly didn’t help. They had a great year in spite of it. Get healthy next year with Derrick Henry, have Tannehill coming in, I think they can be alright with him.”
Can the Titans win a Super Bowl with Tannehill? George believes so.
“I think they can. You see (Jimmy) Garappolo is doing his thing there, they’re (the 49ers) right on the cusp of winning a Super Bowl, they’re still in the thick of things,” George said. “He’s (Tannehill) just got to cut down on the turnovers and find a way to come back.”
When asked if the Titans should explore an option like Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, George cautioned that “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.”
“I wouldn’t go searching for something that — you know, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side,” George said. “I would ride it out.”
If the Titans do want to move on from Tannehill this offseason, it’ll be difficult.
Tannehill’s contract carries a dead-cap hit of $57.4 million if he’s cut, and his large cap hits over the next two years will make it tough to find a trade partner.
The most we expect the Titans to do is draft a quarterback with an eye on the future. We wouldn’t rule out Tennessee bringing in a more immediate, exciting solution, but it’s much more likely Tannehill will be the guy.
