Keeping whichever quarterback starts for the 49ers upright will be imperative to San Francisco swinging an upset in their season finale against the Rams on Sunday. That makes Trent Williams’ absence from Thursday’s practice all the more concerning.
Williams hurt his elbow in the 49ers’ Week 17 win over the Texans. Head coach Kyle Shanahan called it an elbow sprain that the team would need to monitor throughout the week. Williams didn’t practice Wednesday either because of the elbow.
Perhaps the veteran is getting a couple days off to ensure his readiness for Sunday. Williams doesn’t necessarily need the days of practice to be effective on the field. However, his two consecutive absences aren’t encouraging and Friday should give more insight into his availability in the biggest game of the year.
