Well, it seems as though head coach Matt Rhule isn’t the only dude in the Carolina Panthers organization who might need some etiquette lessons this offseason.
All-around nice guy Sam Darnold, who threw for just 132 yards and a pick on Sunday, wasn’t so nice to his teammates following Week 17’s loss to the New Orleans Saints. When asked if the struggling offensive line was failing both himself and fellow quarterback Cam Newton, the fourth-year passer just lumped everyone into the fray.
“I think the bottomline, ya know, is just everyone’s not playing good enough,” he said to reporters. “Me, Cam, everyone on offense—we’re just not playing good enough to win games, simple as it is.”
Whoa, there, Sammy boy. We know you didn’t have any slanderous intentions here. Was mentioning Cam by name, however, really necessary?
Sure, the blame can easily be spread around and Newton is no exception from it. But, uh, dragging his name into a not-so-flattering assessment of the team is certainly not great form.
In fact, the Panthers themselves left that little mention of Cam off their official website’s postgame transcripts:
It’s literally the only part of his quote that was excluded. Coincidence?
So—between Darnold, Rhule and even guard John Miller—taking up accountability, or at least how it is addressed, seems to be yet another concerning issue within the franchise.
