The New Orleans Saints are in a beyond difficult spot at quarterback right now. Jameis Winston is already out for the season with an ACL injury, and ahead of New Orleans’ Monday night matchup with the Dolphins, quarterbacks Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian were added to the reserve/COVID-19 list.
None of this is ideal for the Saints as they hunt for that final playoff spot in the NFC. It apparently got to the point where head coach Sean Payton was reaching out to a familiar face: Drew Brees.
But it’s safe to say that the longtime Saints quarterback is enjoying his retirement. He had just about the best way of saying, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

According to WWL-TV Saints reporter Nick Underhill, the Saints reached out to Brees to gauge his interest in coming back. Brees evidently responded with a photo of himself golfing.
So, yeah, that’s probably a no.
Brees retired at the end of the 2020 season and has been a part of NBC’s Football Night in America pregame show. It’s unclear how serious the Saints actually were about bringing Brees back in for the final stretch, but it would have been a difficult situation for the 42-year-old to jump into — between COVID protocols and the depleted Saints roster.
So now, rookie quarterback Ian Book is preparing to play Monday night for the Saints. New Orleans also brought in Blake Bortles to back up Book.
Brees will enjoy the golf course instead. It was worth a try, though.
