Dematrius Davis is probably the most popular name around the Auburn football program.
Even before Bo Nix’s announcement that he was leaving the Auburn football program, fans were clamoring to see Davis in Auburn and blue.
We haven’t seen it yet but Bryan Harsin said Davis was getting some reps in practice as Auburn engages in bowl practices. This doesn’t mean that we are promised to see Davis in action against Houston in the Birmingham Bowl but it’s more likely than it was a few weeks ago.
His ability to use his feet to make plays could give Houston’s defense some trouble.
I don’t think we will see a lot of Davis next week in action but it’s fun to speculate.
Looking at his tape in Auburn’s annual A-Day game, we saw Davis in a limited role. I think his skill set would be fit in with giving him a few plays in a few packages where he can use his feet to keep the defense on its heels.
We saw his ability to tuck the ball and get downfield. If you watch any amount of his high school tape, you can see his ability to pick up yards with his feet. In the play above you see him feel pressure and make the decision to take the yards.
He has the potential to hit a defense with a deep shot with his arm. My guess is that Auburn wouldn’t use him in this way but we’ve seen Davis use his arm effectively during A-Day and of course during his time playing high school in Texas.
Davis has what it takes to be a special player but Harsin and the offensive coaching staff may wait until spring practices to let him run the offense with the ones.
