If Matt Rhule and the Carolina Panthers are in a relationship, then college football might just be the ex-girlfriend who won’t go away. He’s moved on, but she’s always there waiting for him.
And, apparently, she still is—as indicated on Wednesday by Joseph Person of The Athletic. With some major shifts going on atop the collegiate ranks over the past four days, Person believes Rhule’s ex may come-a-calling.
But does that necessarily mean he’s ready to leave Carolina only two years into this pro endeavor? Not necessarily . . .
Matt Rhule will continue to draw interest for college jobs. I don’t get any sense he is looking to leave. Wants to try to build a winner in Carolina.
If Panthers have another down season next year, that’s a different scenario.— Joe Person (@josephperson) December 1, 2021
Riding in the most prominent spots of the ongoing coaching carousel are Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly—who have been lured over by the University of Southern California and Louisiana State University, respectively. That currently leaves a pair of enticing vacancies with the Oklahoma Sooners and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Rhule, of course, rose to national acclaim for having built up the programs over at Temple University (2013 to 2016) and Baylor University (2017 to 2019). What he has yet to do, however, is build up the organization he’s presently employed at.
That, as suggested by Person, would be one of the reasons why Rhule may not bolt after just two seasons with the Panthers. He and owner David Tepper set out on a mission to restructure this franchise into a winner, and the work is far from over.
