Philadelphia 76ers veteran guard Danny Green has been a productive starter for the entirety of his career. His shooting, his presence out on the floor, and his perimeter defense have always been important aspects to bring to a starting unit.
As Green continues to work his way back from a left hamstring issue, the 13-year veteran from North Carolina has come off the bench in the previous two games. He had not come off the bench since the 2014-15 season with the San Antonio Spurs so it has been a while for him.
He scored 10 points in his first game back off the bench against the Golden State Warriors and he then scored 11 points off the pine on Saturday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. So he was still able to produce despite the new role and the minutes restrictions he is on as he works his way back from hamstring tightness.
“It’s feeling good,” Green said of his hamstring. “I’m taking the proper precautions. I got a whole minute restriction going on, but I’m working through it, building up the strength, it’s going well so far. They’re trying to ramp me up little by little.”
Coming off the bench does change Green’s preparation for a game a bit. There are different things that one does as a starter compared to coming off the bench so there are little changes to his game.
“It changes it,” he said. “It has been a while since I’ve come off the bench so I think the first time that I did it, it’s been years I think, so it was different and awkward, but I got used to it. I came out in the Golden State game and did OK. Last game did OK so staying warm on the sidelines is the biggest thing. Keeping the body warm, keeping the hamstring warm.”
As far as whether this will be a permanent role change for Green as coach Doc Rivers turns to Matisse Thybulle more often, he said one would have to ask Rivers himself.
“You have to ask him, but I think today it might change,” said Green. “You don’t know. That’s above my paygrade.”
The Sixers will take on the Orlando Magic on Monday which will be Green’s third game back after missing four games with the injury.
