Mike LaFleur will continue running the Jets offense from the booth now that Zach Wilson is back.
Wilson will return to the starting lineup this Sunday against the Texans after suffering a PCL sprain in Week 7. The Week 12 contest will be the rookie’s first without LaFleur on the sideline. New York’s offensive coordinator opted for an aerial view when Wilson went down. Coincidence or not, the offense has stepped up its performance ever since.
Naturally, Robert Saleh confirmed on Wednesday that LaFleur is staying put despite Wilson’s return.
“I always wanted to be up there,” LaFleur said earlier this month. “Right when I first got here, that’s 100 percent where I was gonna go. That’s what I always felt, just watching Kyle [Shanahan] in 2016 and just being up there the last two years in San Francisco. I feel like everyone sees it a little bit better up there.”
It was known that Wilson liked having LaFleur on the sidelines during games, but Mike White didn’t share that preference when he took over for the injured rookie. White “didn’t need a guy talking to him down on the bench,” Saleh said at the time.
The Jets have averaged 24.5 points and 435.75 yards over four games with LaFleur in the booth and Wilson out of the lineup. In six games before that, New York averaged just 13.3 points and 272.3 yards with both of them on the field.
