It’s safe to say at this point that Matt Nagy won’t be the head coach of the Chicago Bears past this season. But there’s a question about whether or not Nagy will get the axe midseason, which is something the Bears organization hasn’t done in its 101-year history.
That was the topic of discussion on Tuesday morning when Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Mark Konkol of Patch reported that Nagy would coach his last Bears game Thursday against the Lions. Konkol wrote that Nagy was informed of his pending termination on Monday.
When Nagy met with the media on Tuesday just a couple of hours after the report, he denied that it was true.
“That is not accurate,” Nagy said.

This comes less than a day after a report surfaced from NFL insider Jordan Schultz that an “overwhelming number” of Bears player want Nagy gone.
When Nagy was asked — twice — about whether or not he was assured that he would finish the season as Bears head coach, he declined to answer, an indication that we could still see a midseason firing, especially if Chicago loses to a winless Lions team on Thursday.

After a 12-4 start in his first season, Nagy’s team has gone 19-23 and has two five-game losing streaks in consecutive seasons to his name.
The Bears have lost five straight games for the second consecutive season, and a loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving would drop them to six consecutive losses in back-to-back seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers on deck. Perhaps that would garner a midseason firing.
