The Oklahoma Sooners got back on the winning side of things with their 28-21 win over the Iowa State Cyclones. Simply look at the score and you wouldn’t come away impressed, but considering the performance from the passing game and the game takes on a whole different perspective.
Caleb Williams was just 8 of 18 and was held under 90 yards passing again for the second straight week. It was the ground game that came to life against the 18th ranked Cyclones while the defense put on a pass-rushing show to the tune of seven sacks and several forced fumbles.
It’s the old school element that brought the Oklahoma Sooners their 10th win of the season and keep them in the Big 12 title hunt. It also landed the Sooners on USA TODAY Sports Paul Myerburg’s list of “winners” from the week 12 action.
It wasn’t the prettiest win, but this hasn’t been the prettiest season for Lincoln Riley and the Sooners. For the second game in a row, quarterback Caleb Williams struggled through the air, completing just 8 of 18 attempts, but the freshman had a 74-yard touchdown run to help OU pull off a 28-21 win against Iowa State and head into next week’s game at Oklahoma State at 10-1. – Myerburg, USA TODAY Sports
Caleb Williams’ ability to run the ball keeps him dangerous even when his passing game isn’t thriving. Given what we’ve seen from Williams in his short time as the starter, it’s hard to imagine the passing game woes will continue for the true freshman and the Sooners passing attack.
It’s something to be concerned about as the Sooners get set to take on an Oklahoma State Cowboys team that ranks in the top 10 in both the run defense and pass defense. The Sooners have a week to figure out how to attack the Cowboys defense and set up a Big 12 Bedlam matchup.
