Not much went right for the Raiders against the rival Chiefs on Sunday Night. The offense looked has been Jekyll and Hyde all season, but the one area the Raiders had shown up well all season had been their defense. Not on this night.
Patrick Mahomes threw for the sixth-highest passing yards total (406) of his career, his third-most passing TD’s in a game (5) and wasn’t sacked even one time.
Getting pressure on the quarterback is the one area the Raiders have come up big all season. And they came up empty in this one. No sacks and just three QB hits which contributed greatly to Mahomes carving them up.
Too often there were instances in which middle linebacker Denzel Perryman was the closest in coverage on a wide receiver such as the speedy Mecole Hardman. That’s a mismatch the Chiefs will take any day.
Then there were the instances in which Tyreek Hill was in single coverage or the TD catch he had in which he had the entire right side of the end zone all to himself.
Travis Kelce had a big day with 119 yards on eight catches, his best game of the season. Much of that was due in part to missed tackles.
To begin the fourth quarter, on consecutive plays, the Raiders safeties let them down.
First with Tre’von Moehrig dropping what should have been an interception in the end zone followed on the very next play with one of the most ridiculous attempts at covering a pass you’ll ever see, leading to Chiefs running back Darrel Williams catching the TD on Johnathan Abram. This has to be seen to be believed.
Well that was a fun one 🙂

Abram completely misjudged the pass, oddly leaping backward while Williams just steps in front of him to make the catch for the score. He also missed several tackles in the game which was a common theme.
Long story short, the Raiders defense was beaten every which way. The Chiefs punted one time while going on seven scoring drives, and the only turnover was forced on special teams. That’s how you end up giving up 41 points even with a missed field goal.
I’d love to get a take from a Raiders player or coach but Rich Bisaccia simply deferred to Gus Bradley on any defensive questions and the only defensive player made available was Maxx Crosby, who was so clearly angry about how the game went that he wasn’t saying anything of value. Not that there’s any defense for this performance…so to speak.
