Washington Football Team quarterback burst onto the scene in January with his performance in the Wild-Card loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Heinicke passed for 306 yards with one touchdown while also rushing for another in the 31-23 loss. It was one of the more improbable playoff stories in recent years. Heinicke kept Washington in the game after being signed off the street in December.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians was certainly impressed with Heinicke’s performance and remembered it well.
“He can play, now. He can run,” Arians said via Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington. “He threw some great balls in that playoff game. I think that team plays very, very hard for him. I like the way he plays.”
Sure, Arians is probably saying what he has to before this weekend’s game. After all, Heinicke isn’t a prototypical Arians-type of quarterback. However, the former quarterback certainly respects what Heinicke did in last season’s playoff game.
Washington hopes its quarterback will have help on Sunday as right guard Brandon Scherff, right tackle Sam Cosmi and wide receiver Dyami Brown could all return. Tight end Logan Thomas and wide receiver Curtis Samuel did not practice on Wednesday, so their status appears far less certain.
