The Kansas City Chiefs have been reported as a finalist to land free-agent WR Odell Beckham Jr., but QB Patrick Mahomes hasn’t reached out to make a recruiting pitch.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mahomes confirmed that he hasn’t spoken with Beckham Jr. to try and recruit him and bring him to Kansas City. He recognizes that Beckham Jr. is a good player and could help his team, but his sole focus is on the Las Vegas Raiders with a Week 10 game coming up.
“Obviously, he’s a really good football player who has done a lot of great things in this league,” Mahomes told reporters. “But I’ll leave that stuff up to (Brett) Veach. He does a great job of bringing great players in. He’s always looking around and trying to see what he can do to make the team better. I’ll let him handle that. I’ll focus on this opponent, this week, and try to play with whoever is on that field.”
Andy Reid also deferred any questions regarding Bekcham Jr. to his general manager, saying that it’s in Veach’s DNA to explore every option to make the team better.
“That’s (Brett) Veach’s area and he looks at everybody, you guys know how he does,” Reid said. “I’ve been in a bunker trying to get my work done, so I don’t know. I haven’t really talked to him about that, so that’s where we’re at.”
Commenting on why the Chiefs have been linked to so many high-profile midseason free agents in recent years, Reid gave a recruiting pitch of his own to Beckham Jr. about why he should consider joining Kansas City.
“Listen, we’ve been doing OK,” Reid said. “It’s a great city, a great venue to play here. If you’re a player in this league, I have to think it’s a pretty good situation. You’ve got some young players that are pretty good on the team. . . We do get linked to them. You guys know Brett (Veach), he’s always going to keep his eyes and ears open. That’s how he does. You’re going to get tied in with certain guys — right or wrong — you’re going to get tied in with certain guys. But that’s healthy too, that’s what you want.”
