If the New Orleans Saints aren’t able to reel in Odell Beckham Jr., it’s not for lack for trying. Dylan Sanders of the Reveille, the LSU Tigers student newspaper, spoke with Saints linebacker Kwon Alexander Tuesday evening at an event for Demario Davis’ Dining For Dreams charity fundraiser, and brought up the pending free agency of Alexander’s former Tigers teammate.

“I got you bro,” Alexander replied, via Sanders. “I’m trying my best. I really think we’re trying to get him too.”

The Saints probably don’t have phone line going from general manager Mickey Loomis’ desk to Alexander’s locker, but it’s easy to see how they could all end up on the same page here. There might not be a worse receiving corps in the NFL than what you’ll find in New Orleans, and the opportunity to add a repeat-Pro Bowler like Beckham is tantalizing.

Of course Beckham has to clear waivers before he can entertain offers, and the Saints don’t have enough salary cap space to claim him off of the waiver wire themselves. But if he does go unclaimed and become an unrestricted free agent, returning to his New Orleans hometown makes a lot of sense.

And, hey, maybe Alexander’s influence is enough to seal the deal. They played together at LSU in 2012 and 2013, both youngsters putting in work on special teams just to get on the field, and have remained some of the school’s more-visible alums in the NFL. If everything else were equal, the idea of being welcomed to a friendly locker room has to be appealing.

The daily NFL transactions report will update at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 9, which will include news of whether Beckham was claimed. If not, expect a frenzy centered around his new free agent status. Stay tuned for updates.
