Turnovers have plagued the Kansas City Chiefs in every game they’ve played this season and with no end to the sloppiness in sight, reporters held offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s feet to the fire at his Friday press conference. Ball security has been a major strength of the team in recent years, so the recent inability to hang onto the ball and make good decisions has struck many as a sign that coaching has lacked effect after the team’s loss in Super Bowl LV.
Asked about his strategy for inspiring the players to prioritize keeping possession on offense, Bieniemy told the media that nothing much changes from his usual coaching points, and that small details remain key to playing winning football.
“You keep coaching,” Bieniemy explained. “You don’t change anything. You keep coaching all the fundamentals and all the necessary things that have helped them get to a point to where that wasn’t an issue. At the end of the day, no one ever wants to go into a game turning over the football. But at certain times, things happen, and so the thing that we need to do is make sure that we have the wherewithal to overcome the adversity and make something positive happen.
“So, just like I told the guys, we’ve got to learn to create our own luck. We’ve been very blessed and fortunate for a number of years, but now it’s time for us to create our own luck by getting out of our own way.”
To be clear, luck had nothing to do with either of the Super Bowl berths or playoff outcomes since Patrick Mahomes took over his starting role in 2018. Chalking up the team’s string of turnovers to unluckiness seems to dismiss the total lack of discipline that has led Kansas City astray.
Bieniemy’s insistence on holding firm to his principles as a coach is admirable, but with the Chiefs in such dire straits, it’s sure to be a concern for fans ready for a serious change after the 3-4 start.
