Richard Lawrence, a former captain of the Rutgers football team, passed away on October 26. He was 81-years old.
A three-time varsity letterman, Lawrence was a part of the Rutgers 1961 team that was the first in the program’s history to go undefeated. The team went 9-0 that year, sweeping the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 4-0 record. Rutgers finished the season No. 15 in the final Associated Press Poll.
In 1958, he was a co-captain of the team. His contributions extended beyond the playing field once his collegiate career was over.
In 1963, he coached the Rutgers Freshman Football team and then served as a coach for a number of high school programs throughout the years in the following decades.
After Rutgers, he worked for the Pinelands Regional School District in Little Egg Harbor where he was athletic director for three years. He also served as the supervisor for health and physical education for a dozen years before retiring in 1997.
