Report: Jared Goff hung up when Sean McVay called about trade

Jay Glazer reported that Jared Goff hung up on Sean McVay when the coach called to tell him about the trade.

There have been reports and rumors about Jared Goff’s departure from the Rams not exactly being amicable, with Sean McVay growing frustrated toward the end of their partnership in 2020. Goff wasn’t playing well and it was obvious that McVay wasn’t happy, which was part of the reason the Rams traded Goff to the Lions for Matthew Stafford.

Well, the breakup might’ve been even worse than first believed. According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Goff hung up on McVay when the coach called to tell him he had been traded to the Lions. Then about a month later, they ran into each other at a restaurant in L.A., which created an awkward situation.

“When the trade went down, Sean McVay called Jared Goff, Jared Goff hung up on Sean McVay,” Glazer said Sunday. “They talked maybe a week or two after that, just for a little bit. About a month or two later, Sean McVay and a couple coaches were at a restaurant here in L.A. Who was two tables over? They just sat down. Two tables over! Jared Goff. Like, awkward. They still hadn’t said anything to each other really. Eventually, Sean McVay went over, talked to Jared Goff for about a minute. Those guys were as cordial as you could possibly be, and that was it.”

Goff said this week that he appreciates the Rams and has “all the respect in the world for them over there,” but he also hasn’t forgotten about the way the trade went down.

“I don’t think it nearly eroded the way people thought and I think that was part of the confusion at the end,” Goff said. “I don’t feel like it really eroded that way. Again, I appreciate him saying that and it’s big of him, but at the same time, it was done the way it was. It’s been done.”

Goff has reason to be upset about how he was traded just two years after signing a four-year extension, but the Rams also weren’t realizing their full potential with him at quarterback, so a change needed to be made.
