Celtics injury update: Josh Richardson to sit vs. New York Knicks in season opener with migraine

Richardson will have to wait a little longer to make his debut for Boston.

New Boston Celtics shooting guard Josh Richardson will have to make his official debut with the team another day, with the Celtics relating the Tennessee product will not be playing in the club’s season opener at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 20 at 7:30 pm ET.

Richardson will be sidelined with a literal headache — the team lists him as a scratch due to a migraine. If it isn’t a chronic problem for the Oklahoma native, Richardson may be back as soon as the team’s home opener against the Toronto Raptors this Friday, Oct. 22. The Celtics have plenty of depth to survive his absence in the short term, but will certainly need his defensive capabilities moving forward.

It’s another small blow to new head coach Ime Udoka’s institution of his own distinct style of play for the team, and while at present is not so much of a big deal, is yet another blip for Udoka and company to have to worth through.

Facing another team largely projected to finish in the middle of the pack fo the East standings with Boston by season’s end, it will be if nothing else a solid test of the team’s depth to start the season.
