While the Los Angeles Lakers rolled out their new-look lineup with LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony, the Golden State Warriors were without two of their starters for Tuesday’s preseason contest.
Despite Steph Curry and Draymond Green missing the game for a rest day, the Jordan Poole show displayed no signs of slowing down.
Against the Lakers in Hollywood, the third-year guard continued his impressive preseason run with a team-high 18 points in 19 minutes. Poole shot 7-of-14 from the field with five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Behind Poole and 16 points from Damion Lee, the Warriors cruised by the Lakers for the second consecutive preseason game, 111-99.
Before the Warriors meet the Lakers for the season opener on Oct. 19, here are three things to know from Tuesday’s contest at Staples Center:
Gary Payton II
After missing the first three preseason games with a hernia, Gary Payton II returned to Golden State’s lineup on Tuesday night. In 11 minutes off the bench, the Oregon State product tallied 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Payton II impressed on the defensive side of the floor, swiping a steal and blocking one shot.
The 28-year-old guard is one of the players in competition with veteran Avery Bradley for Golden State’s 15th and final roster spot before the start of the 2021-22 regular season.
Andrew Wiggins
Through two games, Andrew Wiggins has shot 4-of-16 from the field and 2-of-6 from long distance. A tough preseason continued for Wiggins on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Wiggins tallied 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting from the floor and 1-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Over three games in the preseason, Wiggins is shooting 35.7% from the field and 21.4% from deep.
The former No. 1 overall pick will have one more preseason game to get back on track before the start of the regular season.
Moses Moody
With Curry out, rookie Moses Moody received an increase in playing time against the Lakers. Yet, he couldn’t capitalize.
The 2021 No. 14 overall pick went scoreless in 22 minutes off the bench on Tuesday. Moody shot 0-for-7 from the field and 0-3 from long distance. The former Arkansas Razorback has recorded two scoreless contests in four appearances in the preseason.
