After a disappointing home loss to the Buffalo Bills in prime time, the Kansas City Chiefs are lucky they’re not ranked lower in USA TODAY’s weekly power rankings.
At one point this season, the Chiefs ranked in USA TODAY’s top 3 teams. A week ago they were ranked No. 9 after notching a win in Philadelphia, this time they’ve fallen another spot back down to No. 10 with a loss to Buffalo.
Here’s what Nate Davis had to say this week, again honing in on the turnover problem in Kansas City:
“10. Chiefs (9): It’s not often when Kansas City is on par with Jacksonville, but this has been a strange season – and the clubs share the NFL lead with 11 turnovers. K.C. QB Patrick Mahomes’ six INTs match his total from 2020 and are halfway to his career-high of 12 (2018).”
The Cleveland Browns (3), Buffalo Bills (6), Baltimore Ravens (7) and Los Angeles Chargers (8) still rank ahead of Kansas City. The Chiefs are 1-3 against those teams after the loss to the Bills on Sunday night.
Kansas City looked entirely listless and disjointed through most of their Week 5 game. When the offense was moving the ball, their defense was unable to stop Buffalo. When the defense forced some stops against the Bills, the offense turned the ball over or stalled on their drives. They’re not playing good complementary football right now and it’s a big problem.
With weaker opponents in the coming weeks, the Chiefs should be able to get their mojo back on offense and defense. The key will be whether they can carry any success over when they face more difficult opponents down the stretch.
