When things are going right for a team, everything feels peaceful. The quarterback is getting all of the praise, and the coach looks like a genius.
When that’s not the case, it gets ugly fast, and, for Brian Flores and the Dolphins, that’s where they find themselves.
After three weeks, Miami is 1-3, with their lone win being in the season opener against New England where they were a forced fumble away from potentially losing.
Things are not off to a hot start in Miami, and the talking heads are starting to take notice. On an episode of his show “The Herd” this week, Colin Cowherd discussed the Dolphins, and how people on the outside view the situation.
“Now he looks like a bad coach,” Cowherd said. “Because he doesn’t have quarterback play. So, we all loved Brian Flores, and, now, he has a bad quarterback situation. Tua’s not the guy, and he’s hurt. Jacoby Brissett’s a backup. Now, Brian Flores has lost all the momentum.”
Without Tagovailoa the Dolphins offense has struggled to get much going. In the game he left with bruised ribs against the Bills, Miami was shut out. Since then, they’ve lost to both Las Vegas and Indianapolis, the latter of which was winless entering the game.
“Brian Flores, he’s lost the momentum,” Cowherd continued. “And when you lose the momentum, do you lose a handful of players who aren’t getting looks? So, right now they have got to right the ship, and they don’t have a player at quarterback good enough to do that.”
Cowherd’s not wrong at this point. There have been a few flashes of promise from guys like DeVante Parker and Jaylen Waddle. However, the offensive line and quarterback play has been downright disappointing, and it’s preventing those guys from flourishing.
There was also mention of Deshaun Watson, as there has been all season. At this point, it seems like the Texans are going to just hold onto him unless they are blown away with an offer until any off-field issues are resolved one way or another.
The risk of trading multiple first-round picks and players for a quarterback who may not be available to play is too much for this team to deal with.
It hasn’t been pretty early on this season, and Flores does need to do something about it, but Watson is not the right move at this point.
