Jets S Marcus Maye facing charges from February DUI arrest

Jets S Marcus Maye is facing charges from a DUI arrest in February, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Marcus Maye is facing charges from a DUI arrest following a Feb. 22 car crash in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, according to Broward County court records obtained by ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

The Jets safety was charged with driving under the influence, as well as misdemeanors of DUI/damage to property and person and leaving the scene of a crash. The 28-year-old posted $1,500 bond.

Maye’s arrest was not previously reported by media. Failure to disclose an incident to the league could result in discipline under NFL policy. Cimini reported that the league is reviewing the incident and that the Jets did not appear to be aware of Maye’s arrest.

The Jets declined to comment to ESPN. Maye’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, told Cimini, “We are confident it will be positively resolved. We look forward to Marcus getting back on the field soon.”

Maye is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, but he is expected to return for New York’s game against the Patriots on Oct. 24. However, Cimini reported that a hearing with Maye’s attorney and the state attorney is set for Oct. 20 over Zoom. Maye’s arrest means he can be disciplined under the NFL’s personal conduct policy. A suspension is possible, though if and when that would happen is unclear.

Per Cimini, there were no injuries when Maye crashed his 2018 Mercedes into a Volvo on the night of Feb. 22. The Volvo driver filed a civil suit and is seeking “in excess” of $30,000, per court filings.

Court documents show that this is Maye’s first DUI offense.

Maye is currently playing on a one-year franchise tag, which was placed on him a few weeks before the arrest. He and the Jets failed to agree on a long-term extension by the July 15 deadline, and Burkhardt has been outspoken about his dissatisfaction with his client’s situation.

Just last week, the agent made it clear that Maye would be back from his injury before the NFL trade deadline. News of the arrest, however, complicates what was already an uncertain future for the longest-tenured Jet.
