Report: Bennett Williams suffered broken fibula; likely to miss remainder of 2021 season

According to a report from @TysonAlger and the I-5 Corridor, Bennett Williams suffered a broken fibula and is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

We knew that Oregon safety Bennett Williams was likely to miss some time this season after he didn’t play on Saturday against the Stanford Cardinal and head coach Mario Cristobal described it as a “freak injury,” but we didn’t quite know how bad it was.

Now, according to the I-5 Corridor’s Tyson Alger, it appears that Williams will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair a broken fibula that was suffered during Friday’s walk-through ahead of the Stanford game.

The junior defensive back is having surgery to repair a broken fibula this afternoon, a source told The I-5 Corridor, and is expected to miss most of, if not all the remainder of the season. Williams suffered the injury Friday while decelerating during an onside kick drill at practice, just before the team left to face Stanford in Palo Alto.

Ducks Wire is working to confirm the report from Alger, but it appears that Williams’ injury is a serious one.

Williams had an incredible start to the season, with three interceptions through the first four games, helping Oregon’s defensive secondary build what was a nation-leading turnover ration and boosting them to a No. 3 ranking in the nation.

The injury to Williams is a tough blow to the Ducks, who had seen a rash of ailments hamper their depth so far this season. Star running back CJ Verdell also went down with a leg injury in the second half against Stanford, and is expected to miss some time going forward.
