Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard on Thursday expressed his excitement regarding the future of second-round pick Isaiah Todd.
Todd, who was the 31st overall pick, averaged eight points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots in three games during the Las Vegas Summer League. He offered a glimpse of his potential over the summer and projects to have a bright future in Washington.
The Wizards rewarded Todd with a four-year, $7 million contract last month. He will have the first three years of the deal fully guaranteed, a strong indication the team believes in his ability to contribute and develop on the court.
Sheppard credited Todd for being a quick learner.
For the future, having Isaiah Todd and what he brings and what he represents for the future has been exciting. He is a quick learner. I think he is somebody that is going to really try to work every possible angle to get minutes next year. He is not going to give up and that is something we really welcome.
The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 12.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 16 games last season with the NBA G League Ignite. He registered his best game on March 6, recording 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots for his lone double-double of the season.
The opportunity to play for the Wizards has extra meaning for Todd, who was born in Baltimore. He previously said he had a strong connection with the Wizards during his pre-draft workout and interview and wanted to join the organization.
With several new faces on the roster, playing time could be up for grabs so training camp and the preseason should be very crucial for him to begin that transition.
