Bradley Beal to serve as honorary “Mr. Two Bits” against Alabama

Beal, arguably Florida’s greatest NBA player of all time, will make his return to Gainesville on Saturday.

Since the retirement of the late George Edmonson, known affectionately by Florida fans as “Mr. Two Bits,” after the 2008 season, UF’s new tradition has been bringing back a famous alumnus to serve in the role before games.

UF has a big game on Saturday against the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, and arguably the best NBA player to ever wear the orange and blue will be making his return to campus.

The Gators announced that Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal will be the honorary “Mr. Two Bits” for Saturday’s contest, as Beal is set to return to UF for the first time since the school dedicated Billy Donovan Court in Feb. 2020.

“I know the whole ‘Two Bits’ thing is an iconic deal, so when they asked it was pretty much a no-brainer for me,” Beal said. “I’ve never been in a situation like this — 90,000? — so I’m kind of getting out of my comfort here, but that’s OK. The crowd, I’m sure, will be electrifying.”

He said it will take some practice to nail the routine.

“I’ll have to work on it in the hotel room Friday night, but I’ll be ready for Saturday,” Beal said. “At least I don’t have to make a speech or something.”

The third overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, Beal has played his entire career in Washington, where he was named an All-Star in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and has received two max contract extensions. Beal was also a Third Team All-NBA selection this past season.
