Notre Dame needed quarterback Jack Coan’s hands to get the job done on Saturday versus Toledo and they took quite a beating on the final drive.
With a minute and 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame was driving down the field trailing 29-24 looking for the lead. On a play that ended with a penalty on Toledo, Coan dislocated his finger in a collision after throwing the ball away.
Instead of jumping out of the play in a critical time, Coan went to the sideline to get his finger reset. On the very next play? Coan threw the 18-yard game-winning touchdown to tight end Michael Mayer.

In real time, it took less than 30 seconds for Coan to get his finger reset and then throw Notre Dame’s game-winning touchdown in a nail-biter against Toledo. I’ve personally never had a dislocated finger, but I know that must have been quite an uncomfortable touchdown for Coan to throw.
And yet? So worth it.
