Rams preparing to see Bears QB Justin Fields ‘in some form’ in Week 1

While the Bears named Andy Dalton the starting QB, Rams HC Sean McVay is preparing to see Justin Fields in some capacity come Sunday night.

When the Chicago Bears take the field against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football this weekend, it’ll be quarterback Andy Dalton leading them out on the field.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be the one finishing the game.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy has been adamant in his stance to start Dalton in Week 1, despite rookie quarterback Justin Fields inspiring confidence in Nagy and his coaching staff that he could play in a regular-season game right now.

It’s the dreaded quarterback plan that Nagy has been clinging too since the Bears drafted Fields in late April. And it’s one he’s refused to budge from, although that could change real quick if Dalton struggles right out of the gate and things escalate quickly.

But if it is all a ruse — which is unlikely with Nagy — he isn’t fooling Rams head coach Sean McVay, who is preparing to see Fields in some capacity come Sunday night.

“I think it would be naive for us not to prepare for them to be able to utilize Justin Fields in some form or fashion,” McVay told reporters Monday.

Now, whether that’s in relief of Dalton or for a single play remains to be seen. While you certainly wouldn’t want to risk Fields for a single play, much like when Mitchell Trubisky injured himself on a single play last year against the Saints.

But there’s a chance it could be the former, especially if Dalton struggles mightily. After all, Nagy has been known to have a quick trigger when it comes to pulling quarterbacks. And after comments made during his Monday press conference — where he said he’s considering “all scenarios” — it’s becoming more likely than it was at this time last week.
