And just like that, the Carolina Panthers have lost their starting right guard for the 2021 season opener. Head coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Monday that John Miller, who was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list just hours prior, is indeed out for Week 1.
He also confirmed third-year veteran Dennis Daley will start in Miller’s place against the New York Jets. Daley started three games for the Panthers last season at left guard.
This, obviously, isn’t ideal news for Carolina, especially given how weak of an offensive line they currently roster. Miller, additionally, was one of the brighter performers on the unit of late.
Rhule, however, maintains his confidence in Daley taking the reins to kick off the campaign.
“I’m really comfortable with Dennis,” Rhule told reporters. “I feel like he should be starting. He has the skill set of a starter. He’s just had some bumps along the way.”
Daley is no stranger to filling in for Miller either, having replaced his teammate for the second preseason tilt with the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks back.
Miller is set to be away from the team for ten days, indicating that he has not been vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.
