The Arizona Cardinals have a position to address now as the season is about start. Cornerback Malcolm Butler, who has been away from the team as he deals with some personal situation, was considering retirement, as previously reported.
A decision has been made, at least for now.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Cardinals officially placed Butler on the reserve/retired list. That move will appear on Tuesday’s NFL transaction report.
The move removes Butler from the 53-man roster and takes his salary off the salary cap. They may choose to have Butler pay back his signing bonus. Until then, his signing bonus will count against the cap.
As things stand, unless the Cardinals make a move to acquire a cornerback, rookie cornerback Marco Wilson, selected in the fourth round, will be one of the three starting cornerbacks for the Cardinals as they prepare for their season opener next week against the Tennessee Titans.
