Cam Newton has been cut by the New England Patriots.
Perhaps an explanation will emerge as to why this decision was made. Obviously the Patriots drafted Mac Jones out of Alabama in the first round, and the rookie has done well in preseason.
Still, most NFL teams would prefer to have a backup *not* named Brian Hoyer or Jarrett Stidham on hand in case a rookie falters. And it’s not like Newton cost much.
Perhaps refusing to be vaccinated played into the equation? The NFL has created strong rules that make it quite inconvenient for both players who don’t get the jab and the teams that employ them. I don’t know how Belichick feels about vaccines but I’m sure that he deplores players who do anything to put their availability at risk. As do most football coaches.
So as we look ahead to where Cam Newton might go next, let’s start here: CVS. Go get the vaccine! There’s no reason not to! It’s the right thing to do for your career. And society.
Then one of the most compelling players of this era can start a third act.
But where?
