The Carolina Panthers came out on Friday night and treated their preseason game with the Pittsburgh Steelers like it really mattered. Meanwhile, the Steelers came out and proceeded to stumble all over themselves en route to a 34-9 loss.

Worse than the final score was the sloppy play by pretty much all involved. Dwayne Haskins got the start at quarterback but if he was hoping to steal the backup spot away from Mason Rudolph, going 9-for-16 for 108 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception aren’t going to get it done. Haskins was put back on the field when Joshua Dobbs had to leave with an injury so this is nearly a full game of work.

Defensively, the Steelers were almost all reserves and the Panthers offense took advantage. They found mismatches, particularly among the Steelers linebackers and quarterback Sam Darnold was able to move the ball at will when the Steelers weren’t able to pressure him.

Next up for the Steelers is the business of final cuts on Tuesday then preparations begin for the team’s first regular-season game of the year on September 12 on the road against the Buffalo Bills.
