Head Coach Philip Rivers really, really loves his new job and that’s so cool

What an awesome moment for him

So often, we hear professional athletes talk about their biggest fears in walking away from the games they play.

They’ve lived almost their entire lives having a routine and it’s completely centered around putting themselves in the best possible position to compete at the highest levels in sports.

Then, all of a sudden, it’s time to walk away.  And they have no idea what to do next because they’ve dedicated themselves to their sports.

That’s a totally understandable perspective. And that’s why it’s so awesome to see pro athletes retiring and moving into fields they seem to enjoy doing the work in. It might be media, charity work, real estate, whatever. It’s cool to see them happy in retirement.

That’s why it’s so thrilling to see Philip Rivers enjoying his new job coaching high school football so much.

The former All-Pro quarterback took a head coaching gig at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama after retiring. He coached the team to his first win on Thursday night in a 49-0 blowout.

He was asked how it felt to get his first win after the game and, clearly, he was thrilled. Not for himself, but for the kids on the team.

He said his high school football days are some of his “best memories” on the field and he wants the same for his team.

“I’m trying to remind these kids of that. Most of these kids will play…not beyond high school football. We’ve got some kids that will play at the next level and want to. And I want them to want to. But I also want them to appreciate experiences like this. You go over there with the families and classmates and you won a football game. Be excited. Be excited. It’s awesome and I’m enjoying the heck out of it. “

Rivers loves this job. He’s still around the game he loves and he’s helping lead his players through some of the most fun moments of their lives.

That’s an awesome thing, no matter what way you cut it.
