Urban Meyer sure seemed pretty miserable during the Jaguars’ loss on national TV

Not great, Urban!

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Listen, it’s only the preseason and we’re just two games into the preseason but so far it feels like Urban Meyer is going to struggle mightily in his jump to the NFL.

I mean, did you watch any of last night’s Jaguars-Saints game on ESPN? The very successful college coach looked miserable all night long as his team bumbled its way to an ugly 23-21 loss to the Saints in which 18 of the Jags’ points were scored in the fourth quarter when third and fourth stringers were in there fighting for jobs.

Meyer has spoken before about how different the NFL is from college football. Roster size and cutting down to 53 players and not being able to spend a lot of time with your players during the offseason have all been challenges for him.

Also, he for some reason thought it would be a cool idea to bring in Tim Tebow as a tight end, which was a brutal move that thankfully came to an end last week.

Trevor Lawrence, who hasn’t been named the starter yet, and the first-string offense weren’t great again last night in New Orleans and had many people on Twitter, including ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, calling for the team to get a new offensive coordinator already, which isn’t good. And the offensive line was a mess, which also isn’t good. The offense is just a total mess right now and Meyer will have to put in a lot of work to fix it.

Meyer and Lawrence both spoke after the game about the first-string offense and the struggles the group is continuing to have in the preseason. Making things even is worse is that rookie running back Travis Etienne suffered a mid-foot sprain early in the game and is out indefinitely, which hurts a lot.

Meyer’s demeanor on the sideline said a lot and had a lot of fans on Twitter joking about how he’s not going to last long in Jacksonville and that he should end up at some big college program in a few years.

Maybe that will happen but right now he’s in the NFL, in charge of a team that had just one win last year. Rebuilding a team like that isn’t easy, even if you did take a very good QB with the No. 1 pick in the draft. Meyer would often get frustrated during college games when he was coaching very good teams. It’s going to be interesting to see how he carries himself this year when he’s on the sideline coaching a not-so-good NFL team.

Meyer has a huge challenge on his hands and it seems like the more we see of him on TV the easier it is to see that he’s understanding firsthand just how hard this is going to be.

This ain’t college football anymore, it’s the NFL, which is a whole different world.

And that’s something Meyer now knows pretty well.
