The starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs is now a part-owner of two major league sports franchises in Kansas City.
It’s nearly a year to the day that Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes became a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals. A year later, Mahomes has now become a part-owner of the Kansas City Major League Soccer franchise, Sporting KC.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” Mahomes said, via a team press release. “Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

“Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group,” said Cliff Illig, principal owner of Sporting KC, via team press release. “In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer. Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture, and we look forward to contending for championships at Children’s Mercy Park well into the future.”
Mahomes’ soon-to-be wife, Brittany Matthews, also holds an ownership stake in the Kansas City NWSL franchise. That makes this the third Kansas City sports team that the Mahomes clan has in their portfolio. The star quarterback and his family continue to show unrivaled commitment to Kansas City, unlike that has ever been seen from a star player with the Chiefs.
The Chiefs already handed Mahomes a decade-long contract extension, but how long will it be before the team makes their star quarterback a part-owner of their franchise too? It only seems like a matter of time at this point.
