Dissecting Jaylen Brown’s growth as a playmaker in 2020-21

As Jaylen Brown made his first All-Star appearance in 2020-21, his growth as a playmaker stood out.

As Jaylen Brown made his first All-Star appearance during the 2020-21 season, he improved in just about every major stat category, outside of rebounds.

Brown averaged 24.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.6 blocks alongside career-high’s with 48.4% from the field and 39.7% from 3-point range.

What stands out amongst all of the improvements is the assists at 3.4 per game, up from 2.1 in 2019-20. Brown showcased his ability to not just get a bucket for himself, which he had already proven, but the ability to get others involved on a consistent basis.

Brown dished out five or more assists 15 times this season, including a career-high 10 assists in a victory against the Toronto Raptors on Feb. 11. Last season, he scored more than five assists just five times.

For the Celtics, having Brown and his fellow All-Star teammate Jayson Tatum, who also averaged a career-high in assists this season with 4.3 per game, as legit playmakers can take Boston’s offense to the next level, especially if they add a prime playmakers to replace Kemba Walker next season.
