49ers announce 11 changes in personnel department

The San Francisco 49ers made nine promotions and two new additions to their personnel department.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday announced some shuffling in their front office and scouting departments. Nine people were given promotions, and two more were hired on as scouting assistants.

Here’s a look at who was promoted along with their new title:

Tariq Ahmad: Director of College Scouting
Richard Buffum: Manager, Football Administration
Ran Carthon: Director of Player Personnel
Salli Clavelle: Area Scout
Jeff Diamond: Manager, Salary Cap
Fred Gammage III: Pro Scout
Thomas Tupa: Pro Scout
RJ Gillen: Director of Pro Personnel
Ethan Waugh: Vice President of Player Personnel

Ahmad is an eight-year veteran of the 49ers’ scouting department and was previously the assistant director of college scouting.

Buffum is also going into his eighth season with San Francisco. His new role is a step up from his previous job as a contract administrator. He’ll now be heavily involved in player contract negotiations per the team.

Carthon was the director of pro personnel before his jump to director of player personnel. He’s entering his fifth year and will spearhead all player evaluations in the pros and college.

Clavelle became the third woman in the NFL to take on the role of an area scout. She joins Kathleen Wood from the Browns and Hannah Burnett from the Giants per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. She’ll play an integral role in preparation for the NFL draft during her fourth year with the club.

Diamond is going into Year 6 with the 49ers and prior to his promotion was a salary cap analyst. He’s responsible for helping the team manage the salary cap both short and long-term.

Gammage III will be in his sixth season in San Francisco and in his new role will look at players from professional leagues as opposed to colleges. His job is key in trades and free agent evaluations. Before this he was a pro personnel analyst.

Tupa is in Year 4 and will take on the same role as Gammage III after working as a scouting assistant.

Gillen was a pro personnel scout before landing the job of director of pro personnel. He’s in Year 7 with the club and is now overseeing the entire pro personnel department. He’ll also have a hand in game preparations and game planning via advanced scouting.

Waugh is now the vice president of player personnel, a role previously occupied by Martin Mayhew (now the Washington general manager) and 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters. Waugh has been with San Francisco for 18 years and will now head both college and pro scouting staffs.

The two new additions announced Monday are Hayden Frey and Jessi Seumalo, who’ll both take on jobs as scouting assistants.
