Allen Robinson has been the most consistent offensive player for the Chicago Bears since his arrival in 2018. But Robinson remains without a long-term contract extension, and Chicago placed the franchise tag on him earlier this offseason.
Robinson has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Bears, which would be impressive in itself. But it’s made even more impressive given Robinson played in one of the league’s worst offenses with questionable quarterback play.
NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha examined some offseason moves that teams need to make happen. And it’s not exactly a surprise that one of those moves is locking down Robinson to an extension. Especially now that Chicago has drafted quarterback Justin Fields.
Robinson clearly has been a great — not just good — soldier for the Bears. He produced 102 receptions, 1,250 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. He’s been the best receiver on a team saddled with quarterback issues throughout most of his tenure there. Now he’s talking about being patient and having great respect for this organization. The Bears don’t need any more reasons to give Robinson the kind of substantial payday he wants. Especially considering they just made an aggressive first-round move for quarterback Justin Fields, who’d greatly benefit from Robinson’s presence for years to come.
While it should be a no-brainer for the Bears to lock down Robinson long-term — especially to give their young franchise quarterback a top receiving target — there’s a good chance Robinson could play the 2021 season on the franchise tag.
The Bears have until July 15 to sign Robinson to an extension before his $18 million franchise tag goes into effect. And it doesn’t sound like the Bears and Robinson’s team are close, as they haven’t had contract negotiations since last September.
