Titans GM: Julio Jones trade ‘was a move that we needed to make’

Titans fans would certainly agree with Robinson’s view on the trade.

One of the biggest complaints about the Tennessee Titans’ 2021 offseason was that they didn’t do enough with their group of pass-catchers, which was lacking depth after the departures of Corey Davis, Jonnu Smith and Adam Humphries.

And, judging from the move to trade for star wide receiver Julio Jones, general manager Jon Robinson at least somewhat felt the same.

But now Robinson has words to back up that notion, as he called the trade for Julio “a move that we needed to make” while appearing on “Good Morning Football” on Wednesday.

“My charge is to get as many good players on the team as possible and I’m excited about the guys we had back on the roster, the guys that we added in the offseason, but when you’re able to acquire a player like Julio and can add him into the mix of our football team, what we try to do offensively, those don’t come around very often,” he said, via NFL.com. “We thought it was a move that we needed to make for us. I know our fans are super stoked to have him here.”

Like most of us who have covered this trade, Robinson went into detail about how difficult it will be for defenses to game plan for Tennessee’s offense with Jones in the mix.

“To have both of those guys (Jones and Brown), with (tight end) Anthony Firkser, with Josh Reynolds, with Derrick in the backfield, obviously with Ryan, we’re just excited about how they’re all going to complement each other, the stresses they can put on defenses and make defensive coordinators’ job harder to try to game plan of those guys,” Robinson said.

In one fell swoop, the Titans went from having a suspect receiving corps. that ranked near the bottom of the NFL to one of the very best in the league.

Now defenses will get all they can handle from a trio of stars consisting of Jones, fellow wideout A.J. Brown, and running back Derrick Henry, a group that puts Tennessee’s previously elite offense on a totally different level.
