Packers release RB Mike Weber to make room for signing of LB De’Vondre Campbell

The Packers officially added LB De’Vondre Campbell to the roster on Wednesday. The team released RB Mike Weber to make room.

The Green Bay Packers announced the corresponding roster move necessary for signing linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

The team released running back Mike Weber on Wednesday to clear a roster spot for Campbell, who passed his physical and officially signed with the Packers.

Weber, a seventh-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2019, signed to the Packers practice squad on Nov. 20 of last year. He was elevated twice to the active roster as a gameday promotion but did not appear in either game. The Packers signed him to a futures deal in January.

With 2019 sixth-round pick Dexter Williams, 2021 seventh-round pick Kylin Hill and undrafted free agent Patrick Taylor all competing for the third running back spot behind Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon, the Packers had roster flexibility at the position.

Campbell, 27, arrives in Green Bay after starting 70 games over the last five seasons in Atlanta and Arizona. He has four straight seasons with at least 90 tackles, providing the Packers with a veteran to supplement a position lacking experience.

The Falcons made him a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft. He played four seasons in Atlanta before spending all of last season in Arizona with the Cardinals.

Campbell is in Green Bay and in attendance at Wednesday’s minicamp practice. He will wear No. 59 with the Packers.
