Just like every coach in the AFC South that isn’t Tennessee, Urban Meyer isn’t thrilled about Julio Jones coming into the division. As a coach who became familiar with the star from his time at Alabama, Meyer told the media that threats like Jones are exactly why the Jags added help at cornerback this offseason with multiple additions.

“I know Julio back from the days coaching against him when he was at Alabama,” Meyer said. “I saw that and I’m not jacked to see him in our division.

But yeah, that’s always been, you look at our history and that’s somewhere that if you go to games without some legit corners, you’re in trouble. And depth, because those are the positions that get banged up a little bit. So, Tyson [Campbell] and then also the free agency with Shaq [Griffin], you know CJ [Henderson] has got to get healthy and so, we’ve got a little bit more depth there than, certainly, we had a year ago.”

The Jags’ cornerbacks group from 2020 showed flashes between CJ Henderson and Sidney Jones IV, but health kept both from finishing the season as they were placed on injured reserve in November and December, respectively. Now, the group has been bolstered with more help after the addition of pro bowler Shaq Griffin and Georgia standout Tyson Campbell.

At the moment, the group still isn’t fully healthy, but Meyer provided an update on where Henderson (labrum surgery) and Campbell (hamstring injury) were in terms of their recovery process after both participated in walk-thrus on Tuesday.

“Yeah, CJ is nothing live, he’s on the field individual and same with Tyson,” Meyer said. “Tyson, you know, first day of working minicamp tugged his hamstring and we’re being cautious once again. We’d like to get him some Thursday and then let him go next week, so we at least have an idea of what we’ve got.”

Hopefully, both will be back on the field with the rest of the group when training camp arrives. If they can get to that point, it should only help the group’s overall talent level, which could be sneaky good under new coordinator Joe Cullen.
