Things are looking up for LSU football after finishing out the 2020 season with an underwhelming overall record of 5-5.
Plenty would be skeptical of ranking the Tigers as a top-10 team, but it seems reasonable enough to at least put them in the top 20.
Athlon Sports was one network that did just that, putting the Tigers at No. 17 overall in the preseason rankings.
“The Tigers simply have too much talent to finish 5-5 again, so a revamped staff and an experienced roster should result in a significant bump in wins for 2021,” the network’s Steven Lassan wrote.

The Tigers seem to have all the proper pieces in place with an ongoing quarterback battle in the best of ways between Max Johnson, Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier. It’s easy to see how stacked LSU is at the quarterback position and the team has already lost one signal-caller in TJ Finley to the transfer portal because of how tight the competition has been.
They also have made hires who worked under former Tigers passing game coordinator Joe Brady. Both new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz and passing game coordinator DJ Mangas spent time under Brady with the Carolina Panthers.
It will be interesting to see how things shake out when the Tigers return to action on Sept. 4 against UCLA in primetime at Rose Bowl Stadium.
